To kick off the start of more land based and cultural programming the JRDYC had a fish week (which coincidentally coincided with Shark Week!).  The youth with experienced outdoor guides set nets, cast lines and travelled near and around our island.  With an elder in the Shaptuan at the Cree Cultural Interpretative Centre, youth and some youth at heart learned how to clean, prepare and cook the fish that was caught.  The youth caught nearly 50 sturgeon and cooked everything for a community feast to honour the work the youth did.  We also got to learn how to make bannock on a stick, laugh, learn and talk.  Afterwards fish broth and dishes were taken to some of our community’s elders, to share and enjoy.  It was a lot of work for those involved and we had some great learning opportunities for youth and the youth at heart.
